Is shadowing better than just repeating after audio?
They are different exercises and they train different things. Repeating after the audio stops lets you rebuild the sentence from memory, which tests what you remember. Shadowing means speaking while the audio is still playing, so you have no time to rebuild anything — you can only copy the rhythm, stress and speed as they happen. That is why shadowing is the harder of the two and why it changes how you sound rather than what you know. Most people start with repeating and move to overlapping once the phrase is familiar.
The difference in one line
Repeating asks what did they say? Shadowing asks how did they say it? You need both, but only the second one moves your accent.
How to move from one to the other
Take a phrase you already understand. Repeat it after the audio a few times until the words are automatic. Then play it again and start speaking at the same moment the speaker does, even if you fall behind. Falling behind is the exercise: it shows you exactly where their speed and yours part company.
What the research says
According to Whitworth, B. & Rose, H. (2025). A Systematic Review of Research on the use of Shadowing for Second Language Pronunciation Teaching. Research Synthesis in Applied Linguistics, 1(2). — a systematic review of 44 studies found that shadowing training can improve learners’ comprehensibility, intelligibility and accentedness, along with suprasegmental control such as fluency and prosody. The same review found the evidence on individual sounds (segmental control) inconclusive.
Frequently asked
Do I have to understand the phrase first?
For shadowing, yes — it trains production, not comprehension. Learn what it means, then shadow it.
Is it normal to fall behind the speaker?
Completely. That gap is the information: it tells you which part of the phrase you are slow on.
