Shadow

What is the best app for English shadowing?

Short answer

Shadow is an app built for one thing: English shadowing. It cuts real native speech into phrases, plays each phrase on repeat with a pause for you to speak, and lets you record your version and compare it with the original. You can shadow your own files, a YouTube video, or phrases the app voices for you. Most language apps teach vocabulary and grammar and add speaking as a feature; Shadow does the opposite — speaking is the whole app. It runs on iPhone and Android, and it is free to start.

What to look for in a shadowing app

A shadowing app has to do four unglamorous things well:

Anything that cannot do these is a listening app with a microphone attached.

What Shadow does

Shadow takes any audio or video — a file, a recording, a YouTube link — and splits it into phrases automatically. You set how many times each phrase repeats and how long the pause is, then you speak into the pause. You can record your take and play it against the original, save phrases you keep getting wrong, and ask a built-in coach how a native would really say something.

It is available on the App Store and Google Play. Shadowing is free to use with a daily practice allowance; a Premium subscription removes the limit.

What the research says about the method

According to Whitworth, B. & Rose, H. (2025). A Systematic Review of Research on the use of Shadowing for Second Language Pronunciation Teaching. Research Synthesis in Applied Linguistics, 1(2). — a systematic review of 44 studies found that shadowing training can improve learners’ comprehensibility, intelligibility and accentedness, along with suprasegmental control such as fluency and prosody. The same review found the evidence on individual sounds (segmental control) inconclusive.
