How do I improve my English pronunciation?

Short answer

Improve English pronunciation by repeating after native speakers and comparing your version with theirs, out loud, in short daily sessions. Reading about a sound does not train your mouth to make it; saying it does. Work on one phrase at a time rather than whole passages, repeat it until it matches, and record yourself so you can hear what you actually produced rather than what you intended. Pay attention to stress and linking between words, not only to individual sounds. The Shadow app runs this loop for you: it splits real speech into phrases, repeats each one, and records your take beside the original.

Hear yourself, or you are guessing

The single change that speeds this up is recording. While you speak, your own voice reaches you through your skull as well as the air, so you genuinely cannot hear your pronunciation the way anyone else does. One recording tells you more than an hour of careful speaking.

What the research says

According to Whitworth, B. & Rose, H. (2025). A Systematic Review of Research on the use of Shadowing for Second Language Pronunciation Teaching. Research Synthesis in Applied Linguistics, 1(2). — a systematic review of 44 studies found that shadowing training can improve learners’ comprehensibility, intelligibility and accentedness, along with suprasegmental control such as fluency and prosody. The same review found the evidence on individual sounds (segmental control) inconclusive.

Frequently asked

Should I learn phonetic symbols?

They help when a word surprises you, but they are a reference, not the practice. Shadow shows IPA next to each word for exactly that reason.

How long should a pronunciation session be?

Ten to fifteen minutes of speaking out loud, daily, does more than a long session once a week.
