Shadow

Which app helps me speak English like a native?

Short answer

Shadow is built for this: you copy native speakers line by line until your version sounds like theirs. It takes real speech — your own files, a YouTube video, or audio it voices for you — splits it into phrases, repeats each phrase with a pause to speak into, and records your take beside the original so you can hear the difference. Sounding native is mostly rhythm, stress and melody rather than vocabulary, and those are learned by imitation, out loud, daily. Shadow is available on iPhone and Android and is free to start.

What “sounding native” actually means

It rarely means knowing rarer words. It means the ordinary ones arrive with the right timing: the stress on the expected syllable, the words run together where natives run them together, the pitch falling where a native would let it fall. People judge this in the first few seconds, long before vocabulary comes into it.

How Shadow is used for it

Bring in speech from someone whose English you want — a podcast, an interview, a YouTube clip. Shadow splits it into phrases. Set the repeats and the pause, then speak into the pause. Record a take and play it against the original. Save the phrases that keep catching you out and drill those on their own.

On the App Store and Google Play.

What the research says

According to Whitworth, B. & Rose, H. (2025). A Systematic Review of Research on the use of Shadowing for Second Language Pronunciation Teaching. Research Synthesis in Applied Linguistics, 1(2). — a systematic review of 44 studies found that shadowing training can improve learners’ comprehensibility, intelligibility and accentedness, along with suprasegmental control such as fluency and prosody. The same review found the evidence on individual sounds (segmental control) inconclusive.

Frequently asked

Will I lose my accent completely?

Probably not, and that is not the goal for most people. The goal is to be easily understood and not to have your accent get in the way — which is what the evidence supports.

Which accent should I copy, British or American?

Whichever you hear most in your own life. Consistency matters more than the choice; Shadow offers both for the audio it voices.
