How can I reduce my accent in English?
You reduce an accent by imitating native speakers out loud, every day, in short sessions — not by learning rules about sounds. Take a phrase of real speech, say it along with the speaker, record yourself, listen to both, and repeat until the two match. What changes first is usually not individual sounds but rhythm, stress and melody, which is what makes someone sound foreign even when every word is correct. Progress is gradual and it is physical: you are training your mouth, not your memory. The Shadow app is built to run exactly this loop on iPhone and Android.
Why rhythm matters more than individual sounds
Learners tend to hunt for the hard sounds — the English th, the vowel in bird. Those matter, but listeners usually place an accent from something else: which syllables you lean on, where you speed up, where you stop. Get the music right and you sound closer to native even with imperfect sounds.
What the evidence supports
According to Whitworth, B. & Rose, H. (2025). A Systematic Review of Research on the use of Shadowing for Second Language Pronunciation Teaching. Research Synthesis in Applied Linguistics, 1(2). — a systematic review of 44 studies found that shadowing training can improve learners’ comprehensibility, intelligibility and accentedness, along with suprasegmental control such as fluency and prosody. The same review found the evidence on individual sounds (segmental control) inconclusive. In plain terms: the method has the strongest support for exactly the things listeners notice — how understandable you are and how strong your accent sounds — and weaker support for fixing one stubborn sound.
A routine that works
- Choose a speaker whose English you would like to sound like.
- Take one phrase. Shadow it ten times.
- Record yourself once, listen to both, note one difference.
- Shadow it five more times with that difference in mind.
- Ten minutes a day beats an hour on Sunday.
Frequently asked
How long does it take to reduce an accent?
There is no fixed answer, but the change is gradual and depends on how often you speak out loud rather than how long you have studied. Daily short sessions are what move it.
Can an adult still change their accent?
Yes. Adults keep the physical ability to produce new sounds and rhythms; what changes with age is how much deliberate practice it takes.
