Can I shadow a podcast or a YouTube video?
Yes, and real speech is the point — recordings made slowly for learners teach you to understand a kind of English nobody actually speaks. A podcast, an interview, a video of someone you like listening to: all of it works. What you need is a way to take one phrase at a time, repeat it, and leave a gap to speak into, because playing a ten-minute clip straight through is listening, not shadowing. The Shadow app takes a file or a YouTube link and splits it into phrases for exactly this.
What makes a recording easy to work with
Clear audio and a speaker you want to sound like. That is the whole list. Speed is not a problem — you can slow a phrase down and bring it back up — and length is not a problem either, because you will be working on thirty seconds of it at a time.
Working with a long video
Do not try to shadow all of it. Find the thirty seconds you liked, cut those into phrases, and stay there until they come out right. One minute of material, properly drilled, is a week of practice.
What the research says
According to Whitworth, B. & Rose, H. (2025). A Systematic Review of Research on the use of Shadowing for Second Language Pronunciation Teaching. Research Synthesis in Applied Linguistics, 1(2). — a systematic review of 44 studies found that shadowing training can improve learners’ comprehensibility, intelligibility and accentedness, along with suprasegmental control such as fluency and prosody. The same review found the evidence on individual sounds (segmental control) inconclusive.
Frequently asked
Does it have to be a native speaker?
It has to be someone whose English you would be happy to sound like. That is the only requirement that matters.
Can I shadow something I recorded myself from a conversation?
Yes. Your own recordings are often the most useful material, because they are the English you actually need.
